This page is a flexible tool for selecting vocabulary to teach early reading skills. It can be used to teach the letters in any sequence desired. The displayed vocabulary can be read on screen or it can be printed. You can also print out the current vocabulary for creating basic writing excercises. There are several pages in this series. Each page contains a number of grapheme phoneme correspondences (GPCs). (What are GPCs?) The sequence may seem random, but they are actually ordered by the number of new words you can build at each step from the corpus of words used for these pages. In reality, however, this may not always be evident if you don't select all 4 levels of vocabulary and all 3 syllable length checkboxes. You may select the checkboxes in any order you wish and the page will always try to find words that are composed of the letters (GPCs) you have selected.
The left side sidebar contains the controls to make things happen. The right side displays the vocabulary which matches the selectors you have chosen. You may also log in a user name and the computer will keep track of each user's progress separately. You may have multiple people using this page by logging them in each time they use the program.
This shows the number of words currently being displayed.
There are several levels of vocabulary available. The levels are rough approximations for age leveled vocabulary. Level 1 corresponds to vocabulary that a typical 6-year old would understand. Level 2 is about for 8-year olds. Level 3 is about for 10-year olds and Level 4 is for 12-year olds. You may select more than 1 level at a time.
These checkboxes control how many syllables the words will have. You may select more than 1. It is possible that if you select only #2 or #3 you may not see any words for some selections you make.
Selecting this highlights the current letter being focussed on in the words being displayed. Unselecting this checkbox removes any highlights.
Selecting this sorts the vocabulary words randomly.
Selecting this displays all the vocabulary which can be built using all the selected letters. If this is not selected then each vocabulary word contains the letter currently focussed on.
Clicking this link pops up a new window and changes the vocabulary list to one column and adds dashed lines to the right of each word to make a printable page for writing excercises with the current vocabulary.
Selecting this changes the vocabulary list to the specified number of columns.
Clicking on a letter changes the text size of the displayed vocabulary.
This section lists up to 48 different letters or digraphs (GPCs). They are ordered in the most productive order for the current corpus of words from top left to bottom right. It is recommended to start by selecting in the top two rows. However, it is not necessary to use the given order for your sequence. If you wish, you may select any letter in any order and at each stage the script will find words which match the selected letters and make them available to you. It is possible that when you click a letter that the page does not display any new words. This can be remedied by either selecting another vocabulary level to add to the current one or by selecting an additional syllable length or by selecting additional letters.
This section is not visible when you first start using this page. When 2 or more GPCs have been selected which are pronounced with the same sound, this section becomes visible. In this section each sound is given one row with a checkbox and the multiple ways to spell that sound which the student has already covered are listed. Selecting the checkbox will produce a mixed vocabulary list which contains all the spelling patterns listed.
Clicking these links take you to the next or previous pages in the sequence. These pages will remember which items you have selected using cookies. It is recommended that you complete all the GPC units on one page before moving to a new page but it is not required.
This link takes you to a page which allows you to select word initial or word final consonant clusters. This will display vocabulary which contain these clusters.
Clicking on this link clears your history and allows you to start over again from the beginning.
